Cata, this turned out great! I love the overall message. And I see it with Colombia media all the time.

Ooh, I like this connection between journalism and Superman and the power they hold. That's interesting.

Really thoughtful essay, Catalina! I liked getting your perspective on this. What you're saying is SO true.

Same I quit the news too.

Speaking of — if you want to read some of the worst headlines ever, check out “Dear Troubleshooter” in the Japan Times.

The articles will give you anxiety, severe confusion, and agitation- but hey! At least you’ll have funny hooks you can send to your friends and family.

What on earth!!! I'm impressed by these headlines! A third-grader could have written them.

Very important essay Catalina 🙌🏼. Something I’ve been thinking about a lot. Journalism has turned into cheap entertainment. Important to find better (timeless) sources of information and ideas.

I love what you've written here Catalina. It's so good. I can't wait to keep reading what you write about this. I stopped watching and consuming the news years ago. If something important in the world happens, a friend will tell me about it. But that's not because I don't value good investigation and opinion, I just couldn't find it. I used to love some of the independent war journalism that occurred when the US invaded Afghanistan (I was at the Naval Academy and found it so insightful and formative). I'd love to know who you think is doing a good job of true journalism.

Thank you for the kind comment Latham :) I am impressed with the number of people who, after reading the essay, have written to tell me that they also stopped following the news because good quality information is hard to find.

So, to answer your question: When it comes to Chile and international news that would be classified as "world breaking" there's a journalist called Juan Manuel Astorga that does "deep dives" into current issues, and he explains clearly and briefly the position of each party involved in the subject he's covering; so you get the whole picture. You also understand which parts of his coverage are facts and which ones are his opinions; there's no confusion or weird messages.

When it comes to international news, I was a subscriber of the New York Times for a year up until March. I subscribed to follow the war in Ukraine (it had an ongoing timeline of events I found pretty good). I also followed the issues in Afghanistan regarding women's rights through the NYT. I didn't renew my subscription, but I still get its newsletters. I turn towards Juan Manuel Astorga for international news as well.

This essay strikes you with reality and pops your bubble. It talks about a subject that not many of us even think about.

We are so used to consuming media without giving it a second thought, but Catalina helps you open your eyes and start being more critical about what you consume.

Thanks for your honest words!
